Editor's Note

Do you think that you've run out of good story ideas? Do you feel like the Muse isn't talking to you anymore? Well, I have a counter-intuitive suggestion: stop writing.

Stop writing on an actual story or a project, that is. For a couple of years now, I've kept a freewriting journal. Every day, before I begin working on my current writing project, I freewrite for two minutes. No more, no less. I take inspiration from a song, a photograph, an interesting article, or even from google results for a random word. If I'm not going to be doing actual writing on a particular day, I still do those two minutes of freewriting. I've written a lot of useless crap during my freewriting, but I've also gotten more genuinely good story ideas than I will ever have time to write. And I've learned something interesting.

The quality of these story snippets is inversely proportional to the amount of actual writing that I've done recently. If I'm writing well on my other projects, maybe 1 out of 10 freewriting sessions produces a good story idea. If I'm bogged down in editing or in my day job, the result is a lot closer to 8 out of 10.

So if you feel like the well has run dry, perhaps it's time to try some no-pressure freewriting for just a couple of minutes a day--no longer--and to spend the rest of your "writing" time working on editing or market research or some other related task.

What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:

No new publications this month. I've been pretty busy with my serial story, Circus of Brass and Bone. So far I've written comfortably far ahead of where I need to be
, but my edits are not keeping pace. Part of that is because I need to take out some things I revealed too early and rejigger the whole plot. Part of it is because plot and character movement means I need to rewrite details of my alternate Civil War history. I am not a history buff, so it requires unhappy amounts of research to keep this consistent!

Keep writing, keep submitting, and good luck!

Featured Market
This is one for all my steampunk peeps! White Cat has a call out for a new pro-paying anthology, Airships & Automatons.

We seek steampunk stories featuring strong characters, exciting plotlines, and automatons and/or airships. We don’t want the latter to be mentioned in passing; they should be central to the plot. We aren’t shooting for any particular mood with this book. Dystopian, humorous, pulp, Lovecraftian, upbeat or dark— all have a place here. Please don’t feel constrained to write in a Victorian setting.  It’s steampunk, push the boundaries.

The basics: steampunk, 4,500-5,500 words, $.05/word, reprints accepted, open until filled.
