Editor's Note
A friend of mine recently asked how to make writing stories a habit. She has some ideas, but she needs practice in writing consistently. Write consistently, butt in chair, make writing a habit: those are pieces of advice that writers hear a lot. This doesn't work for everybody. Some people are by nature binge writers, and others can only produce worthwhile material when circumstances are right. For me, making writing a habit is crucial. When I haven't written for a while, the quality of my writing goes down until I can get back into the groove, so to speak. I need it to be a habit.

So how do I (try to) do it?

1. Write a little bit at a time, every day, no matter what. This is not about you meeting your goal of 5,000 words a day. This is about you sitting down and writing every day. The amount you "have" to write should be so small that you can push it out in about fifteen minutes if you have to--and you'll feel silly about complaining that you don't want to do it, since it takes so little time. Freewriting is one way to do this.

2. Schedule it. Maybe this is the thing you do after dinner every day for an hour. Maybe it's what you do when the baby's napping every afternoon. Maybe it's what you do every morning on your bus ride in to work.

3. Reinforce it with little rituals that you won't ever feel reluctant about (this works best if you have a habit-forming personality). When you start, have a piece of chocolate, listen to a particular song or start up a playlist for the story you're currently writing. Be careful with this. You can become overly dependent on your starting rituals. You can also build up a ritual until it starts taking time away from your writing. Try to avoid that!

4. Keep writing on your mind when you're not writing. Maybe that means deliberately daydreaming about your story during a commercial break, or while you're walking the dog, or doing dishes. Keep a notebook around to scribble down notes whenever inspiration comes to you. Keeping the story always on your mind will help build momentum and make you *want* to keep the habit going.
.
What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
I've wrapped up the last couple of podcasts from MinnSpec: the Minnesota Speculative Fiction Writers Group (switching to live streaming). The most recent episodes are about query letters and legal issues for authors. Read more and download the podcasts here: http://www.meetup.com/MinnSpec/messages/boards/thread/22420402
I've started getting up my notes on miscellaneous writingy bits that I found interesting or useful from the 4th Street Fantasy convention. Those can be found here: http://cloudscudding.livejournal.com/tag/4th%20street%20fantasy%202013

And last but not least, the horror anthology Eulogies II: Tales From the Cellar is now available for Kindle on Amazon.com (print version also available).

Keep writing, keep submitting, and good luck!

Featured Market

The Midnight Diner is a hardboiled genre quarterly digital publication with a Christian slant.

No restrictions on God, no restrictions on reality. Didactic preachy works are dismissed unceremoniously; we’re looking for high quality works that are uncompromising in craft, content, and quality.

The Diner is not for children, or the faint of heart. Jesus dressed up as Thor, a whore who moonlights as an exorcist, a bouncer at a strip club, and more offbeat characters were regulars in the first edition of The Diner. This is not Guideposts or your Sunday School quarterly. Pansy, sanitized work will be unceremoniously dismissed. Do not send us work where gangbangers say things like, “Golly gee, Beav, what ever are we going to do with this swell crack?”

The basics: SF/F/Horror/Weird/Adventure, 3,000 - 6,000 words, pays "Exact figures forthcoming, but it’ll be a fair chunk of change," no reprints.
