First, objective proof that a baby in a bear hat is the cutest thing ever:

Next, the most recent baby-stuff accomplishment--the nursery! Painted by Grandma Staffin and Phil. (I had baby-watching duty.) To understand how awesome an improvement this is, it is important to note that the room used to have walls of a Pepto-Bismal pink with a lime-green ceiling.

I theoretically plan on stenciling sea turtles and sea grass as a border above the stripes, using this turtle stencil:

Life with baby is better these days. It's been a month. He's sleeping for longer stretches, he's fussing less, I can put him in the swing or in the playard to be amused by the mobile for 10 minute intervals. He's figured out the breastfeeding thing, I've figured out the diaper-changing thing, and we've figured out the vitamin dropper thing. And at this point I love him and find him adorable, which really helps--in part because he's started being responsive. He coos and smiles and makes silly faces, he looks for me when he hears my voice, and he's happiest in my arms. He still has some intestinal fussiness. He still wants to be held most of the time when awake. But we're starting to get a more regular schedule (most days) and I'm starting to be able to get other things done. Today I emailed work and said I could start doing projects again. We'll see how that goes.

Day 27. Busy 2 hours--baby fed three times in close succession, then spat up copiously all over everything. I changed jeans, sponged myself off, then gave baby a bath (very traumatic for him), dried him off, changed him, fed him (since he had just vomited up the contents of his entire stomach), put him in a clean onesie, put him in a clean sleepsack, put him to sleep, tossed his previous blankie in the dirty laundry (we now keep a tub of dirty laundry downstairs for just such things), changed the protective sheet on the couch, and got a clean burpcloth out for the next time he nurses. Whew.

Day 28. Cassius has learned how to laugh! His first chortle was this morning around 5 a.m. Baby giggles are adorable, even if they don't seem to be connected to anything yet. On the other hand, he's started smiling in response to stimuli--though he still also has the random-neurons-firing smiles.

Day 29. Also, we should have named the baby "Harry." As in Houdini. As in, even swaddling blankets that are still large enough for him won't keep him contained if he wants out. I find him with the blanket loose and over his face--*not*good! So no blankets for him without adult supervision. Thank goodness for Halo swaddle sleep sacks--seriously, those things are magic.

Day 29. Called the hospital and gave them C's insurance info to reprocess their claims. Called the insurance people and got them to reprocess the claim that the hospital had submitted as BB (Baby Boy) instead of C's actual name.Thing about babies is, they don't exist to insurance people until they have a social security number, which they don't get until about2 weeks after birth assuming you filled out all your paperwork correctly. So then you have to call everybody and get everything redone. Sigh. Well, at least this was expected and normal insurance wrangling, as opposed to the shit I've been going through with a testing lab that is such a bunch of idiots they can't believe they got paid (they did. in April. I've sent them proof multiple times.). So I've made all the insurance calls I have to for a while, now just need to process the rest of the medical bills--oh, and I suppose, call the testing lab idiots in a week to verify that this time they have updated their records and I won't be getting any more bills or calls from a collection agency.

Every time a suspicious noise emits from Cassius' diaper, changing time is postponed another 5 minutes. Because what you don't want is the poo-splosion to take place while the diaper is off (in the process of being changed). It's a veritable symphony over there right now....

Day 30. Paid most of the hospital bills, did the math on the rest--looks like the money in our FSA/HRA will be able to cover all the costs that insurance won't. Yay! Oh, wait. Except our deductible is getting refigured now that C's on the insurance, so who knows. I'll see what the next insurance statement/claim says.

Day 30. 5 minutes in the Moby wrap and baby is out like a light. I don't know how to get him to keep his chin up, though, so I worry about asphyxiation. Quiet baby good. Quiet smothering baby bad.

1 month. He's survived me raising him for one month. I am a little surprised.... Happy birthday, little man!

1 mo, 3 d. While Grandma Staffin was visiting, she and Phil measured baby again. He is now 24-25 inches long (he was only 21 inches a month ago....). Again, this is both incredibly short and very long. At the same time. He's like Longcat, but a baby. http://folkloregonian.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/longcatsky.jpg

Remember how awesome the bouncy ball is for soothing a fussy baby? Well, as the weather turns cold, my feet turn coldest, and I wear socks around the house. Turns out socks provide no traction--so when I sat on the bouncy ball I was in imminent danger of falling on my ass. Oh, how I hope my winter slippers have enough sole to save me toes from frostbite....
