Via Hearing Voices, I give you “17 Species of North American Mammals” (6:58 mp3) by Matmos. Half song, half natural soundscape, alternately soothing and hackle-raising.

We have a slight squirrel problem. A squirrel chewed its way into the fascia edging around the bottom of our 2nd floor porch and set up housekeeping. Note that this is directly below where the cats' litter boxes are and the cats were able to smell the squirrel so hopefully the squirrel is able to smell the cats. The goal is to make it unhappy enough that it decides this is a bad place to live and stays away while we fix the hole.

Today Phil poured mothballs inside after ascertaining that it was currently uninhabited, and we know exactly when the squirrel returned! I have never heard a squirrel complain that much and that loudly. It knew who was responsible, too. It went around to sit directly in front of our stairwell window, facing in, and chattered angrily at us for about an hour.

It even scared our cat out of the windowsill.

Yesterday, I pulled up the window blinds at work, and nobody has bothered to close them yet, so I could actually see outside today. (For some reason, people usually shut the blinds, adding to the claustrophobic feeling of the work environment.) In the afternoon, I noticed a flock of birds swooping and spiraling through the sky in a way strange to me. That wasn't how our usual city birds--pigeons, sparrows, and crows--behaved.

When I went outside, I saw dozens of robins perching in the trees and flying in the sky. The afternoon was warm enough that I didn't need a hat or mittens. The ice was all melting. I've always heard that robins are a sign of spring, but I've never seen this many all together in my life. It was an awe-filled, magical sight. Three or four other people walked by and never even glanced up, but I saw.

Mutant Tomatoes
Planted in June. Ripened after Christmas. Strange odd fruit born of an unnatural love and unfit for human consumption. Children two and three. Though the first tomato that ripened tasted pretty delicious on a BLT!
What was that unnatural love? )

Harbor Seal, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Taken at the Milwaukee Zoo. I love how it looks like it has it's own underwater temple or ruin.

Empty Shell, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Found on the shores of the Mississippi River and taken home with me. I think some wild critter sure enjoyed its lunch!

Red Leaf, Green Plank, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Near job #1, in the park that I like walking in on my breaks.

Rubber Ducky Ahoy!, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

This photo was in no way staged by me. I found this rubber ducky bobbing along the shores of the Mississippi River, looking none the worse for wear. I left it there, to bring entertainment to another startled person.

Hyenas Play Tag, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

They do, you know! These hyenas paused for a round of "I'll chew on your leg" in the middle of playing their version of Fetch/Tag with the stick in the background here. Seen at the Milwaukee Zoo.

Flowering Vines, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Growing wild up the fence boards in somebody's back alley.

Bejeweled by Currants, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

The currant bush in my backyard. When the light hits it in the late afternoon, it really does look like there are jewels hanging from the branches. I saw this on my way out the back gate to take one of my "photo safaris." For a split second, I hesitated to take the photograph because I thought it "wouldn't count."

Then I came to my senses.

Monarch Butterfly, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Taken in my own backyard. Before you ask, no, I'm not sure what that weird light green thing is to the left of the butterfly.

And the sky's just about that color outside right now....

Giant Dragonfly Spies, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

I was on my way to the bus stop one morning when I saw this creature resting quite sedately in the center of the sidewalk. You can't tell size very well from this photograph, but he's about four inches long. He's a brilliant green, and there's a creepy eye/eye-shaped coloration on top of his head.

I wondered if he was a spy robot.

Shy Flower, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Taken at somebody's alley-side garden, during one of my neighborhood photo safaris during the golden hour. I have no idea what the flowers in it are (except for the marigold!), but I love the way this turned out. My favorite photograph of the roll. Really highlights how much better my manual camera is than my automatic, sadly....

I've gotta think that this is violating a regulation somewhere....

This morning, I found a butterscotch candy in my coatpocket. On the bus-ride to work, I saw a janitor twirling his broom as if it were a martial arts staff.

I hope it's that sort of day. Yesterday was blech. The day before that, though, I stalked a giant green dragonfly, stared into the sun until tears streamed down my cheeks, climbed on top of our Very Steep Roof without dying, and was a passenger on the Extremely Unfortunate Bus.

What sort of day have you been having?
