Ice Teats (1 of 3)
An odd pattern of melting and freezing caused these to form. Neat and weird; it looks like the log is about ready to suckle little ice-pups.

Also, ice still doesn't burn real well. )

Empty Shell, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Found on the shores of the Mississippi River and taken home with me. I think some wild critter sure enjoyed its lunch!

Rubber Ducky Ahoy!, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

This photo was in no way staged by me. I found this rubber ducky bobbing along the shores of the Mississippi River, looking none the worse for wear. I left it there, to bring entertainment to another startled person.

Hidden Fish, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

A fish lurks in the shallows.

This is one of those that I will eventually scan large.

One day only, specially propped tree beside the Mississippi River!

Drowned Engine, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

A rusty engine sunk in the mud of a Mississippi River inlet. Taken when a summer drought had reduced the river's level as low as I've ever seen it.

Thistle Cave, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

I like this photograph because of its sense of layers. Also because all manner of creatures live on the banks of the Mississippi River, so I have no idea what might lurk beneath the pretty thistles.

Found: One Leg, Disembodied, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

From a distance--well, you can imagine. Oddly enough, an actual dead human body was washed up on shore the next day. Somebody else found it.

Searching For a Nest, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

From a certain angle, this appears to be a strange new avian form of riverlife nestling in at the shore.

Diving Goose, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

A goose dives after a fish in the Mississippi River as its compatriots watch.

Trailing Gosling, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

One little gosling trails after its mother on the Mississippi River.

Hiding in the Green, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

The blurry brick building in the background. That is work. The forest in the foreground? That is where I hide from work on my breaks. I pass through it on my way to the river.

I can't help wondering at the stories behind the things the Mississippi River spits up.
