They do, you know! These hyenas paused for a round of "I'll chew on your leg" in the middle of playing their version of Fetch/Tag with the stick in the background here. Seen at the Milwaukee Zoo.
These hyenas were both quite young, and they seemed to be having the best time of any animal that I saw at the zoo (barring the otters that were, um, "gettin' jiggy wit' it"). There was lots of running around in circles and mock-charges and playing tug-of-war with a branch. They were definitely a crowd favorite. What you can't see here is that one of the alcoves in the rock wall behind them is a small window. This small window is placed down a narrow hall across from the indoor lion enclosure (by accident, I believe). So the lions could see the hyenas playing when they ran past a small window about twenty feet away down a darkened corridor. And one lion in particular was *fascinated*. His eyes followed their every move. He would even get upset and try to see around people if they blocked his view.
