Books From Library
Sep. 20th, 2006 04:18 pmChecked out today. I'll let you know what I think of them, and whether or not they pass the first fifty.*
Idolon, by Mark Budz - cyberpunk - a body-modification trend seems to be having some really, really bizarre side-effects. Themes: cinematography, reproductive control, information age, new humans, technology shock. Excerpt.
Snake Agent, by Liz Williams - near-future Asian occult investigation ("John Constantine meets Chow-Yun Fat" the blurb begins). SFSite Review.
Crossover, by Joel Shepherd - far-future SF - an artificially-created person tries to figure out her place in the world while kicking a whole lot of ass. Looks like fun. Excerpt.
* The First Fifty - If I stop or never started enjoying a book, I put it down, and screw that whole "must finish what you start" principle when it comes to reading. If more people came to reading with the attitude that it is fun and they don't have to force themselves to it, I think more people would read more. It's not a school assignment, folks! I give every book I've checked out at least ten pages, unless the writing is downright horrible. Beyond that, I try to make sure to read at least fifty pages out of all the books I check out. If I happen to have to return them before I've read them completely, then at least I know whether or not I want to go to the effort of checking them out again. There are many books that I read the first ten pages of, give them a raspberry sound-effect, and never go back to. There are a few books that I am sucked into immediately and cannot stop reading until I finish. There are more books that I find to be very pleasant and entertaining and know that I want to finish reading, even if not this-very-instant. There are many books that are inoffensive and entertaining but not compelling--I'll read them if I have time, but if not, eh.
