As my blurb says, Vicesteed is a steampunk science fiction novel that is equal proportions locked-room murder mystery, exploration of how society forms identity, and high-octane quest for vengeance. Who can resist a science fiction story with sex, violence, romance, spaceships, androids, Victorian England, exploding clockwork sculptures, robots, and a locked-room murder? I'm currently working on the 2nd draft (or is it the third?) of Vicesteed. *

What it really is is a sprawling ugly steampunky beast of a novel that I finished writing and promptly got so scared of revising that I shoved it in a (metaphorical) drawer and left it there for a year. I'm serious about it now; cleaning it up and submitting it out is my number one priority. The problem is that I need feedback to know where to really prune, and what parts just don't work together well. I did get some critiquers started on it in my first aborted attempt to work up enthusiasm for editing it (got critiquers, collected some critiques of the first few chapters, then threw up my hands and hid under the bed).

Since I wasn't maintaining contact with critiquers and encouraging/nagging them properly, almost all of them fell by the wayside. Quite naturally. And now I'm about to exhaust the old critiques I got. Critters and MinnSpec are all well and good, but I think I'll be catching up to them relatively quickly, too.

So I'm trying this again. Does anybody want to volunteer to read and critique/comment on Vicesteed? If you're a Critters member, I *will* give you credit for it once you're done.

Read a little )

* It occurs to me that I really need a logo or icon for Vicesteed. People seem to do these things, and it is a good, quick visual tag. I'm not much for making art, myself, but I could probably dress up the title in a nice steampunky font.

* Posted writing log
* [livejournal.com profile] penthius freewriting, "The Line for Escape: Science Fiction"
* Uninstalled OpenOffice 3 and reinstalled OpenOffice 2, in the hopes that now I'll be able to work without having to deal with a word processor that crashes all the time.
* Submitted "The Haunts of Hill Crossing" to Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show. 1 submission down, 20 to go.

  • 22:27 Yep, am definitely ill. Tomorrow AM I'll figure out if I feel up to working. It's not like I get any sick pay.
