One of the things that I self-deprecatingly say when somebody asks if I enjoy/am good at cooking is, "I managed to burn water once."

Well, now I've done it again.

I put the teakettle on to heat water, went upstairs to wait, and got distracted by two extremely affectionate creatures of the feline variety. Cue about half an hour later, when I realize that I didn't hear the teakettle whistle.

I go downstairs, and I start smelling something--cooking. Apparently, a burning teakettle smells a lot like those dried bacon bits that are always at salad bars. Or a little like cooking bacon. The gas flame of our stove usually burns blue; now it's burning green with tongues of gold...and they're licking up the sides of the (very empty) kettle.

Note to Self: Just...don't. Not again.
