Maybe you should give options and let the gift giver choose? Some people may be shy and not want to be in a story, but would prefered a signed first edition (for when you are world famous author). Or vice versa.
Also, maybe they don't want to be a character in the story but have a loved one that they'd like to see in the story (spouse, kids, best friend, etc.)?
