No Vacation From the Vacation

When one's spouse is essentially absent for three days in a row, and one has two very small mess-creators, it's a lot more difficult to get that post-vacation decompression/unpacking/cleaning done. Yeah. A LOT. By which I mean, it's still not all done. All our laundry tubs are overflowing with freshly washed but not yet folded laundry. I finally got around to unpacking my backpack only because I needed to pack it again with writing supplies for my coffee shop work-date. I'm still not sure how the dirty dishes managed to multiply so fast.
A week ago, we were out in Kansas for my widowed father's wedding. That is a post I need to make separately, because of all the little details I want to remember. And I have a ton of photos. We got back late Sunday night. Phil took Monday off as well, and on Tuesday he worked from home. Monday, we went to the Minnesota Zoo and had a pretty great "still on vacation" day. We brought our own ham bagel sandwiches, since I really couldn't purchase any food there and avoid dairy and soy. I still tried, since I had a blood sugar crash, but I ended up with a bag of chips and an apple and grateful for them.
Can you tell they're related?
Tuesday I took Fu Manchu to the vet, since he had a strange irritation on his stomach. A shot of antibiotics and a head-cone, and he's doing much better now. Still in the cone of shame, though. Which is hilarious.
Wednesday and Thursday, Phil had to work until about 2 AM trying to get a customer order done. Friday, he got to come home a little early because they don't have an overnight shift on Fridays, so he only worked until about 9 PM. Next week looks like there might be more of the same for some days.
It's good that he didn't have to go in over the weekend, since it was his birthday! We were all still decompressing and trying to recover, so his birthday celebrations were very low-key. I made sour cherry and chocolate chip muffins for breakfast (since we didn't have blueberries, his favorite, which I discovered after I'd made the rest of the recipe). I gave him a Red Sox World Series box set, and he spent a lot of time relaxing on the couch with Cassius and watching that. Then he built a pillow fort on the couch and spent some time inside it with Cassius (who called it a tunnel) watching baseball. We grilled for dinner: ribs for him, Greek-seasoned chicken for me, corn, Chinese-seasoned eggplant, oven-baked spicy potato wedges, and caramel apple cake. Pretty tasty and relatively easy to throw together. And The World gave him the gift of a new credit card number, which means it's time to use the old credit card to a) buy music from sketchy Russian sites, and b) strip the DRM from my purchased B&N ebooks, so I don't have to worry about losing them if B&N goes under.
And in random news, I learned that Heart-Healthy Bisquick is soy-free, diary-free, vegan as far as I can tell, and can be used to make a deliciously messy caramel apple cake (thanks, Dana!).
