Editor's Note
This month I was able to attend the annual AWP conference, which "provides community, opportunities, ideas, news, and advocacy for writers and teachers of writing." It's primarily aimed at literary fiction writers, academics, and publishers of literary fiction. As you know, I write speculative fiction: fantasy, science fiction, and horror. I went to the conference not sure how much it had to offer me. It was good. The literary fiction genre has certain conventions that make certain writing challenges more visible. Pointing out solutions is easier. And the solutions apply across genres!

In general, getting multiple perspectives is very useful. Don't wear genre-blinders!
What I've been up to lately, writing-wise:
As I mentioned in my editorial, I attended AWP! That was a weekend, alright.
Oh, and an anthology I have a story in is now out!

Minnesota writers of science fiction, fantasy, and horror come together in By Polaris Bright, the third annual MinnSpec anthology. My (reprinted) story, "Diplomatic Relations," involves the lengths a group of human diplomats must go to in order to establish peaceful relations with a newly contacted alien species. Think Star Trek, but X-rated. Definitely not for everyone, but just right for some people.

Featured Market
Betwixt publishes speculative fiction of all sorts.
Betwixt publishes speculative fiction of all sorts—fantasy, science fiction, speculative horror, slipstream, weird fiction, steam/diesel/cyber/etc.punk, you name it. We particularly like stories that smash genre boundaries to smithereens, but we also love fresh takes on established genres and in-depth explorations of ultraspecific niches. Experiments in form and style are welcomed enthusiastically—but a straightforward narrative with tight, crisp language is just as beautiful. When it comes down to it, we want stories that will amaze us, astound us, provoke our thoughts, and boggle our minds.
The basics: SF/F/H, 4,000-7,000 words, pays $.03/word (max $225), no reprints. Guidelines at http://betwixtmagazine.com/submissions/.
