The blurry brick building in the background. That is work. The forest in the foreground? That is where I hide from work on my breaks. I pass through it on my way to the river.

In Egypt, the past feels alive — and we're not just talking about the great pyramids at Giza. Every spring, the country's citizens celebrate a holiday called Sham el-Nessim ("sniff the breeze"). Picnicking outdoors on fresh scallions, hard-boiled eggs, salted fish, and lupines (a type of seed and a popular street snack), they participate in a food tradition that stretches back to the time of the pharaohs.

Sniff the breeze? That's a fantastic name for a festival.

Nectarine Cloud Pie has got to be one of the tastiest-sounding desert names ever. Who cares what it actually is?

P.S. The cabbages and kings? Just red herrings.
