To Excerpt or Not to Excerpt, That Is the Question

Hooray! A definitive* answer on the question of whether it's good or bad to have an excerpt for an unpublished (but hoping to be) novel up on your website.

Answer: Probably okay, as long as it's only a couple of chapters and you control the website so it isn't there forever if your publisher wants it to be changed. On the other hand, never ever ever publish stand-alone chapters in a magazine or somebody else's website, because odds are you're giving up rights that you'll need later.

*Definitive = a literary agent's opinion, because that's the sort of person whose opinion I'm caring about right now.
