I have a relative who is in the habit of sending out fwd emails and chain letters that support his political views, which are, I should mention, a bit more right-wing than most of the rest of the family. I don't usually respond, because usually they don't pertain to my choices. But then he sent one out with a subject line of "Planned Parenthood: A $1 Billion Evil Empire."
I am the sort of person who has to stand up and speak out when she disagrees strongly with what another person is presenting as fact or as acceptable/unacceptable behavior. And yes, this has caused strife in some of my relationships (including with some of you!). But to say nothing, just to keep the waters smooth and my life easier, would be unforgivably weak.

Please sign this petition to President Bush, which FRC will deliver, asking him to approve new Title X regulations that ensure no federal money goes to groups like Planned Parenthood. Ask him to see that legitimate clinics are not forced to refer for abortions.
Planned Parenthood: A $1 Billion Evil Empire

Dear XXXX,
While most companies have started to feel the squeeze of our sagging economy, business has never been better for Planned Parenthood. Although the organization couldn't be more controversial, its profits have never been higher, according to the group's 2006-07 annual report. For the first time in history, Planned Parenthood has surpassed the $1 billion mark in annual income, a milestone made possible by $336 million of your tax dollars.
Despite the rash of bad publicity, Planned Parenthood received a $31.4 million pay raise in taxpayer funds--a 10.8 percent increase in the "nonprofit's" government revenue. Adding to the windfall, Planned Parenthood's clinics worked overtime for an extra 24,707 abortions in 2006, six times the number of casualties from the entire Iraq war. All together, its abortion mills put 289,650 unborn babies to death in the year 2006 alone. This is an increase of more than 20,000 aborted babies from the year before. All from an organization whose supporters say they want to make abortion rare?
Planned Parenthood also makes a tidy sum sowing its wild oats in the next generation of abortion customers. The group sold more than 1,400,000 "emergency" contraception kits, in many instances making transactions without as much as a medical exam.
While the public is increasingly skeptical of Planned Parenthood's operation, it has yet to put a dent in the organization's bottom line. For that, we need your help. The majority of Americans wouldn't invest in a company that conspires in sexual crimes against children, accepts racially-motivated donations, promotes pornography to kids, devotes millions to the election of pro-abortion politicians, and uses unsanitary equipment to treat patients. Unfortunately, through Medicaid and Title X, the federal government is forcing taxpayers to do just that.
Please sign this petition to President Bush, which FRC will deliver to the White House, asking him to approve new Title X regulations that will ensure no federal money goes to subsidize the abortion facilities of groups like Planned Parenthood. Ask the President also to ensure that legitimate clinics are not forced to refer for abortions. When you are done signing this petition, please forward it to all your friends.
Is Planned Parenthood a Wise Investment?
Sincerely,
Tony Perkins
President
P.S. Thank you for signing this petition to President Bush. He has limited time to act so please follow through now -- and forward this message to friends and family so we can secure an end to the ties between tax dollars and Planned Parenthood's abortion trade.

Thank you for reminding me to donate money to help support Planned
Parenthood! They deserve support for all the wonderful work they do to
help prevent abortions. Without the low-cost birth control and sex
education they offer, there would be hundreds more abortions every
year, as well as many more ruined lives. It's so important to break
the cycle of ignorance, poverty, and children giving birth to other
children.
So this email did do some good!

In response, I got six emails from other family members supporting me, and one against (quoting a section of Proverbs that I do not believe applies). Yes, I had 'Reply-All'd that first email.
I was surprised by your response. I thought you would be more educated
about Planned Parenthood and their racist practices and anti christian
values. Where in the bible do you find that the education they give, and
killing babies is Christain?
####################################
Did you know that Planned Parenthood supports rapists and child molesters by
performing abortions on girls as young aas 13 years old without reporting it
to the police. In Olathe, Ks there were 3 sisters who had abortions because
of incest and reported nothing. I am asuming yu suport this, because this
isn't the only clinic doing this. Instead of sending money to Planned
Parenthood, Maybe you should consider MCC instead.
#####################################
As far as the education that they offer, I am not Catholic and so I
believe that birth control is a very good thing.
I am not sure how they are racist? Most organizations that were
founded more than 50 years ago had racist founders, because that is
the way that America was in that time period. I assume that you mean
because they help non-white women and girls to prevent unwanted
births, through birth control and, yes, abortion. Unfortunately, it is
still true that most of the poor people in America are non-white, but
it is *poverty* and the ignorance that comes with poor education that
causes this disparity in circumstances.
Oh, and I *do* also support MCC!
I should be clear--I think abortion is a terrible thing and a choice
that no woman should have to make, but I think it should remain legal
and I do not believe that it is murder. It took prayer and Bible study
for me to reach this view. I do not believe a cluster of cells is a
human being with a soul. Biblically, scientifically, and morally, a
fetus is not the same thing as a baby.
If you're interested in how the Bible reflects this view, there are
in-depth explanations here:

Note: If the question comes up, you're welcome to link to this post and/or to quote from *my* responses. I didn't address the "notify the police" comment because I'm not current on all the issues and didn't want to open that can of worms. But I believe that most states that have a "notify for underage" rule require that the *parents* are the ones who are notified. That clearly wouldn't have helped.

Date: 2008-04-08 09:35 pm (UTC)I remember when a Jehovah's Witness stopped by our house and gave Chris this little blue book explaining the inherent problems with evolution. Chris said he would read it and set a time for the guy to come back. Well, lo and behold, the book quoted Carl Sagan, which happens to be one of Chris's favorite authors. So when the guy came back, Chris had photocopied highlighted portions of text from Sagan books to show this guy how the church was misquoting Sagan. He didn't like that very much. But he didn't quit. There was another visit or two where he was trying to get Chris to agree to meet for a longer discussion (to pray and convert) - so Chris said, I will listen to all that you have to say, as long as you permit me to explain to you why I am an atheist, and I will read all of the books you want me to if you will read all the books I want you to.
The guy didn't come back after that.
