Buttercream Wedding Cakes Tasting

At
chesh's request, I tasted Buttercream's wedding cakes. I'm posting here for ease of inserting photos with text. Feel free to read if you like photos and descriptions of cake, I suppose!
I've tried to match the cakes' names with those on the Buttercream website, but sometimes what we were told does not quite match. That's why there are other names in parenthesis.
All the cakes (except for the carrot cake) are made from either white cake or chocolate cake, with a white frosting on top. The only difference is the filling between the layers and a "mist" that may or may not be applied to the cake layers. Both the white cake and the chocolate cake are good. The white cake is lighter than many wedding white cakes and has a flavor that is good and similar to pound cake. The chocolate cake is rich and dark. The white frosting that goes on the outside of the cakes is light, creamy, and tasty--way better than the heavy decorators frosting many cakes use.

Clockwise from top: Carrot cake, Raspberry Diva, Almond (Praline?), Bailey's Chocolate, Fresh Raspberry. Wedding cake at Buttercream (http://buttercream.info/) in St. Paul.

Clockwise from top: Amaretto Mousse, Cappuccino souffle, Marble, Lemon Raspberry, Chocolate Truffle (Truffle Fudge?). Wedding cake at Buttercream (http://buttercream.info/) in St. Paul.

Raspberry Diva
Chocolate cake. Good. Very rich, very sweet, but not well-balanced. The chocolate overpowers the raspberries.

Almond (Praline?)
White cake. The almond flavor is on the overpowering side. There are chunks of almond in the frosting. It is OK, but it won't be everybody's favorite and might cause problems for those with nut allergies.

Carrot cake
It is good, spicy carrot cake. The layer in between is cream cheese frosting. I am of course prejudiced toward carrot cake. After all, that's what we chose for our wedding!

Fresh raspberry
White cake. This is OK. I find the raspberry filling on its own to be too heavy, and because the raspberries are mixed in with the frosting it isn't especially fresh-tasting, though not bad. Phil prefers this to the one with lemon.

Bailey's Chocolate
Chocolate. Very good, very rich. The Bailey's is not overpowering, and the frosting is rich but light.

Cappuccino souffle
Chocolate. The "souffle" part of the name sounds weird, but it tastes good. Very good. Rich, like a good mocha. The filling is light.

Marble
White and chocolate cake, with a layer of the same frosting as is on the outside in-between. Good. It tastes like a good marble cake, and is the lightest of the lot.

Lemon Raspberry
Good. My favorite of the white cakes. The cake is misted with a light raspberry extract that adds subtle flavor. The lemon makes it taste a lot like a lemon cake with raspberry filling. The raspberry filling is pretty dense, a heavier filling.

Chocolate Truffle (Truffle Fudge?)
Chocolate. Phil's favorite. Very good. Very, very rich. The frosting is like a hot fudge sauce in consistency and flavor. Very sweet.

Amaretto Mousse
White cake. The amaretto filling is OK, not too strong, but still distinctive.
Strawberry a la Ritz
Alas, it is a specialty cake, so we couldn't taste it. From the description, it is basically a strawberry shortcake. The white cake would work well for that.
Final Verdict
Strawberry a la Ritz sounds lovely, but we didn't get a chance to try it. If you want something chocolatey, Chocolate Truffle is your winner. If you want something fruity (that we tasted), I prefer the Lemon Raspberry. Both the Bailey's and Cappuccino chocolate cakes were pretty good, too.
