Sword Practice in the Snow 1, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

The other day (you can tell it's the other day, not today, because there's only a little snow on the ground), I went out back to practice my swordwork. In Minnesota. In winter. While it was snowing. There I was, practicing while wearing snow boots and gloves. The exercise kept the rest of me warm enough that I didn't need a coat. It was both entertaining and awesome-feeling, though I mostly looked ridiculous*.

Then the UPS guy walked around the side of the house. I took the package, we exchanged pleasantries, and he walked off wearing the hugest grin. They usually leave packages in the front porch; he must have heard me and gotten curious enough to come around the side of the house to see what was going on.

Eventually, I managed to stop laughing and get back to practice.

Then my neighbor came home. We exchanged greetings, and he went inside...wearing the hugest grin.

I'm guessing that was one of the more entertaining random things that happened to them that day.

* I have no knack for self-photography. I did, however, discover the continuous shooting mode on my camera.

Photo This-Instant Meme, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

Since I have a camera now, I can actually do this! I still think it was cruel and unusual that this meme started circulating through my friends page right after my camera broke.

If you want to play this meme, take a picture of yourself right now. Don't change or edit the picture. Post it as is with these rules.

Phil Cocoon

In the cold winter months, this is what he's likely to do as soon as he gets home. Curl up on the couch and wrap a blanket around himself until he turns into a Phil cocoon. The girl cat likes this plan, as she enjoys sitting on people, especially when they are properly covered up.

Snow Day

Yes, yes, everybody else is blathering about the snow and you really wish it would go away, I understand...but the view out my study window is oddly soothing. Snow blanketing the ground, edging and defining dark tree trunks, and mottling the roofs of my neighbors. White plumes coming from chimneys. An occasional quick-moving blotch of color as a bird or a squirrel darts across my yard. And inside, a sugar-cookie-scented candle, warm slippers, hot tea, and a cat sitting on the back of my chair.

In other news, the Mad Scientist is still voiceless, which is also oddly soothing.

And now to the writing, for lo!, I have deadlines.

In which it is proved that yes, my cats are the most adorable pets ever. (They are also evil incarnate sometimes, but we're not talking about that.)

More. )

On Friday, I saw my first green buds of the year tentatively growing from a bush that clung to the riverbank.

This morning, I woke up and thought that somebody had dusted the tree with powdered sugar.

The sky is colored the grey of city snow, and the trees reach up like charred skeleton hands.
