Because I am bound and determined to finish blogging out this year's CSA, even though I'm still in October in my posts and we just got our last delivery this week.

Romanesco broccoli, originally uploaded by aswiebe.

The most fractal vegetable you'll ever see. Whenever I get this out to cook, I end up staring at it in awe for a while first.

CSA Delivery #21 - Half of a Harmony Valley Farm share
Click through to see notes on what's what. Contents: garlic, red and yellow onion, white baby turnips, green top carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, edamame, French orange or serenade melon (no idea which I got!), raspberries, tomatoes, peppers, head lettuce, red radishes, spinach. This was the beginning of the "OMG, more peppers than I can handle" deliveries. Also the first time I've been advised *not* to peel carrots, just to scrub them. And it was okay.

Cauliflower au Gratin
Original recipe source: Simply in Season, Phil said it was "like homemade macaroni and cheese, but with cauliflower". From the CSA: cauliflower. Served with sauteed ring balogna and more of the Indian spiced barbecue sauce. Also with salad. Salad from the CSA: lettuce, carrots, radishes.

09/11/2008 delivery #19
Due to funeral, we went out of town and so handed over the whole thing to our CSA partners.

09/18/2008 Delivery #20
I was still recovering from my grandmother's funeral. My camera was dead, foully murdered by my aunt, so I didn't take pictures. It's almost like it never happened. Creepy.

Contents: Raspberries, French Orange Melon, Lettuce, Peppers, Baby White Turnips, Carrots, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Garlic, Yellow & Red Onions, Edamame, Eggplant, Celeriac, Tomatoes

The best Indian barbecue sauce ever. )

Winter Borscht
Original recipe: Simply in Season. Mmm, borscht, the food of my ancestors. Was quite good--would definitely make again. It's also a pretty flexible recipe, as long as the basic seasonings and ingredients are there. From the CSA: beets, beet greens, kale (I think--the leaves were in with the beet greens), cabbage, onions, green beans, potatoes. Served with basil-yogurt biscuits (not pictured) In the biscuits: basil.

Stuffed Tomatoes with Parmesan, Garlic, and Basil

Delicious. I made the recipe with 1/2 the called-for tomatoes. I baked the tomato innards and leftover topping together at the same time, and it made a great bruschetta-type topping. Original recipe: America's Test Kitchen. From the CSA: tomatoes, basil, garlic.

CSA Delivery #16
Click through to see what's what. Contents: Watermelon, Melon, Garlic, Saute Mix, Eggplant, Green peppers (because I hates them, I gave them away, so they aren't pictured), Leeks, Green beans, Edamame, Yukina Savoy, Zucchini, Cucumbers , Salad mix, Raspberries. What I learned: cucumbers are difficult to use in large quantities, and Japanese eggplants are what Nanny Ogg would have called "humorous vegetables."

Cucumber Sandwiches
I'm pretty good at finding ways to eat the strange things that show up in my CSA, but cucumbers are a tough one for me--you can't really make a meal out of cucumbers. *I* thought these sandwiches turned out pretty well, though Phil insists that cucumber sandwiches are for high tea, not dinner. And since we never have high tea.... It's really a pity, since this was dead simple, and (I thought) rather tasty. Original recipe: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/printerfriendly/SMOKED-SALMON-AND-CUCUMBER-SANDWICHES-1144. From the CSA: cucumber, dill.

Eggplant Caprese with Grilled Tomato and Basil Vinaigrette
Although grilling eggplant made me very nervous because I wasn't sure whether it should be over high heat or low or for how long (and now I've forgotten, so it'll be the same adventure next time), this turned out really well and tasty. Grilling eggplant kept it from getting that slimy texture that often occurs. I made this at [livejournal.com profile] xcorvis's barbecue, and the reception was favorable. Original recipe http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/EGGPLANT-CAPRESE-WITH-GRILLED-TOMATO-AND-BASIL-VINAIGRETTE-238764".

Chicken Fajitas with Crunchy Lime Cabbage and Avocado
Possibly my most favorite recipe of those I've made to use CSA produce. Certainly my favorite cabbage recipe. I made it twice within a week. Original recipe source: Epicurious. From the CSA: cabbage.
