Less than two weeks now until the end of school and the onslaught of summer vacation. Phil says I always act like it's this big scary thing to have the kids home and like I won't be able to do anything else for the whole time--and he's right. I do act that way. BECAUSE IT'S TRUE!

Kidding. A little. But I am trying really hard to finish writing the rough draft of Desolation Station before summer hits, and I don't expect to get a whole lot done after that.

Yesterday was my birthday. I didn't go collecting birthday freebies or do much this year, mostly because I was still recovering from Saturday's 5K. It's not as much fun going places when you're using a cane and prone to unpredictable spikes of pain in your knees. But Phil got a fancy "tuxedo" cake, and steaks, and corn on the cob. We had a very tasty dinner--the steaks were *so good*. Grilled perfectly, just short of well-done but still juicy. Penzey's Chicago Steak Seasoning is delicious. The kids got me a candle (Theia) and an "Ignore the Mess" mug (Cassius--very funny, kiddo!). Phil plans on taking me to a home store to buy a new lamp for the bedroom. And then after the kids were theoretically in bed, we watched Inside Man.

The 5K was on Saturday! Theia's been doing Girls on the Run this year, an afterschool program that culminates in running a 5K at the State Fair Grounds with approximately 3,000 other Girls on the Run, their running buddies, and their coaches. Theia needed a running buddy, and it was very unclear if I would be physically capable of this. Phil tried running. Once. And immediately got shin splints that ruled this out. Because of his recent work trip to China and how busy he's been at work with other projects, he didn't have the time to try and scale up training. I've been doing a Couch-to-5K program this spring. I tried this program last year, too, and it went really badly. I was basically always crippled after trying it. This year I was smarter and did a lot of physical therapy work before beginning running. I have really bad knees thanks to post-traumatic osteoarthritis caused by blowing out my ACLs and the surgery that replaced them.

And now I need to rest a bit and do more of my physical therapy exercises to recover.

(time passes)

So now it's one week until the end of school. ::runs around screaming with panic--except I can't run right now:: I am still getting lots of gnomes randomly stabbing my knees with daggers. This is what happens when my knee inflammation flares up and I get meniscus involvement and some other bullshit. I can kinda walk down stairs semi-normally today, though, which is better than the rest of the week. (Edit: nope. Thought I could, and then a gnome stabbed me in the knee while I was going downstairs and I nearly fell down the damn steps.) So that's severely inhibited my ability to do things around the house, plus I need to take time to ice my knees, do physical therapy exercises etc. I am not good at taking that time.

And then our dishwasher flooded all over the floor on Friday. We were able to get an appointment to have the repair guy come out on Sunday and take a look at it. He did, he has ordered new replacement parts for the filter and pump, and when they arrive we will need to make another appointment. In the meantime, we maybe cleaned out the filter enough that it kinda works? With close supervision? (Edit: also nope. It flooded all over the place. Again.) And there have been a lot of handwash dishes, which is a problem for me since standing for long Angers The Knees. But Phil's been great, and I made the kids wash some dishes too.

We had been thinking of maybe traveling to Wisconsin for cousin graduation parties, but appliance repair plans and long car rides being bad for knees nixed that. Instead, on Saturday Theia had a birthday party to attend at Johanna Beach, which is a nice little beach in Arden Hills that I'd never visited before but it was the perfect weather for it. And Phil and I looked around Home Depot and Target and surveyed lamp options for my "new bedroom floor lamp" birthday present. Eventually I concluded that modern lamps all suck (and are too short! what's up with so many modern floor lamps being under 5' tall???) and I'll be buying a Tiffany knock-off from the internet.

The rest of today is basically going to be struggling to get the kids to do their homework. (Edit: That went really badly. 5 hours of being screamed at.) Next week is field trips and special events and school wrap-up events. And then next weekend is 4th Street Fantasy convention for me, a writers' convention that I look forward to every year! As well as Father's Day, so I need to help the kids do something for that.

Hey, I finished a journal entry!

Summer--the time when I remind myself I like long hair because I can get it all out of the way, but I wonder if a buzz cut would be easier. Then I remind myself that that might send the wrong message. Then I wonder if that actually matters.

The weather today is gorgeous and fantastic. All the house's windows are open, the cats are loving every stray scent that blows in, and we're grilling tonight around 6. Company welcome! Come on over, and bring something to throw on the grill.

Today is already a very good day. Sadly, because of Shopping! The Kmart on Lake Street has a couple of really good deals in the clearance section that have meant I can cross some items off my long-term "to own" list. They've got a couple of Roombas for $90--that's a great price! If you've been thinking about getting a Roomba, that would be an amazing deal. You have to pay an extra $8 at the cash register for a 1-year warranty, and it doesn't come with an automatic charging station or invisible walls, but it's still a good deal. Since the battery died on my old Roomba, I bought the new one for parts, basically (an entire Roomba for only $20 more than the battery replacement cost!). I also got an Everlast standing heavy bag for $30, because it rang up $20 cheaper than the already discounted price, which was $50, which is still a very good price for a standing heavy bag. Now I just have to resist the temptation to use it for another month or so (v. difficult). And they've got all kinds of rose root stock for sale from $6-$3!

Hmm. I think I'm supposed to actually be doing writing work today. I should get to that!

This morning--did the first Spanish lesson on CD (thanks, [livejournal.com profile] yanni85!). Got potluck potatoes started in the slow-cooker for tonight.

Unpleasantly hot at home, so we relocated to Cahoots. The air-conditioning has about as much effect as air-conditioning usually does in a place inhabited by people with laptops and various coffee-making machines, but it's notably cooler than inside at home was. Soon I'll start making editing changes to various short stories that have been red-marked, but not changed to match those edits. They've been patiently waiting their turn. Then away to the potluck.

Not sure what I'll do tomorrow. I don't think I have any work, but the public libraries are closed on both Sundays and Mondays (poor budgeting, boo hiss!), so I'll have to find a coffee shop that a) is within reasonable bus/biking distance of home, i.e. downtown, uptown, or South Minneapolis, b) has free wi-fi, c) has air-conditioning, d) is not likely to be crowded, and e) will be okay with me just buying a couple of cups of coffee but hanging out there for hours. Suggestions?

Life is going much better now that I'm at the library. This morning was an unpleasant, hasty, why-am-I-running-so-far-behind start to the day. I didn't have time to eat breakfast, and I'm not one of those people who can skip breakfast without any problem. I've got to keep my blood sugar balanced, my body reacts to not being fed at regular intervals by inflicting extreme pain and shakiness on me, and I get ravenously hungry within an hour of waking up. So I grabbed a poptart to chew on as I ran for the bus. Literally, as I ran. Food isn't allowed on the bus, but the driver took pity on me and allowed me on with a crumbled half-handful of pop tart. In my hurry to get out the door, I forgot a couple of things:
* books that are due at the library today
* headphones to use with my laptop, and
* my tape player for listening to audio books or the radio at work

I give myself points for actually having my hair up, my tennis shoes on (no sandals allowed at work--besides, the better to run with), and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch in my bag.

However, this meant I was starting to lose it at work today. I just couldn't take it without something to listen to. Also, I hadn't expected there to be enough work to last for more than a couple of hours. There was. And it was tedious and mind-numbing as always, but I had nothing to distract myself with. I knew it was bad when I realized that a) I was about to scream or start talking to myself in a crazy bag-lady fashion, and b) I was honestly happy that my co-worker was half singing along with the rap music he was listening to.

So after lunch I fled. Packed up my bag and absconded to the library. Feeling much saner now. Think I'm on edge because a) haven't had more than one day off per week for the last way-too-long, and b) the damn heat wave means I haven't been able to sleep. I wake up every two hours, like clockwork--that's when the wifebeater I've been wearing to bed (is it a husbandbeater if a woman wears it?) dries out, and my cooling-by-evaporation system stops working. And I get irrational on sleep dep way faster than most people do. In fact, that may have been a large part of my problem the second year in college.

And I got to bed late. And I don't know what's for dinner. And I can't sleep in the library because somebody might steal my laptop. But I'm tired. And I have things to do. And I have so many, many things to do.

...and I plan on living here during the heat of summer. I've got a laptop, I'm allowed to bring my water bottle inside (and even coffee, should I feel inclined to purchase it from the coffee shop on the ground floor level). They have wi-fi. What else do I need?

Wait. Better hours.

To be fair, the Central Library has better hours than most of the other ones, but it still closes tonight at 5 p.m., and it isn't open tomorrow (tragedy!). I would like to be able to stay here until the need for food drives me out to hunt the hot streets of downtown Minneapolis, but no. They will kick me out at a "civilized" hour, and then I will melt.

Also, what shall I do with myself tomorrow? I guess if all else fails I'll hunker down in the basement with my laptop and my writing, but--basically, I'm pretty much fair game for *any* inexpensive plan that will keep me out of the heat this weekend. I don't much feel like going to a bar, but that might end up being the thing tonight, I guess....

Yesterday, I ended up hanging out with a fair number of people in the air-conditioned comfort of [livejournal.com profile] malcubed and [livejournal.com profile] chesh's apartment, playing with my laptop, chatting to people, and playing a little bit of penta-go, a game that I am horrible at. That was nice. And air-conditioned.
