I read Snow Crash at an impressionable age, which made me want to grow up to be a gargoyle, a person who wears a computer/camera/mic that is constantly collecting information and images from the world around them.

That dream is one step closer with the Looxcie wearable camera: http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20016652-1.html

Man, I wish I had disposable income....

Hey, guys, Minnesota's in the news! And what a headline!

Kids Swap DNA for Fairground Rides

I am slightly regretful that "The Circus of Brass and Bone" is set more historically, and so I cannot use this...or can I? Bone aether, blood, the circus' disbarred-doctor-and-snake-oil-salesman's experiments when...oh, but that would be spoilery if I told you.

But...oh, this could be fun.

"No need to head to the Farmer's Market! Head to Cub Foods, to fill your basket with fresh produce picked at the peak of the season!" - Pandora ad that just played at me.

I find it very interesting that Cub is trying to lure back the people who shop at farmer's markets. I wonder if the group is actually large enough to hurt their bottom line these days? I was listening to a Splendid Table episode that was discussing the impact of the recession on food purchasing habits, and one of the more interesting bits was that farmer's markets and producers of organic foods have not really been impacted.

I hope it's significant. I hope it's an enduring trend.

This may also say something about Pandora's ability to target demographics based on song taste--seems a little far-fetched, but possible, given how good they are at targeting songs I may like.

I have a Clocky coming in the mail sometime sooooon, thanks to woot.com!

But it won't be here tomorrow morning to wake me up. Which is good. Because I am ridiculously tired, which is why I'm writing such a brambly, rambly post.

I've been working full days divided between the home office and the law firm pretty much all this week, yet failing to get to sleep at a reasonable time (while still not accomplishing much--although I sort of have the "dinner party" excuse, plus after dishes and laundry and dinner there's really not much evening left) and am still more tired than usual. So I have been rather exhausted.

...as you can probably tell from this post. Which I wrote out-of-sequence.

This was another really good panel. There were lots of questions raised that could lead to good stories, and once the transcript is posted I'll put it here (my browser kicked me out partway through, so I lost the first half).

Resources
[kalcobalt] 3:45 pm: ah! Thanks, Deena.     I should put in a brief plug: my
website, www.kalcobalt.com, has LOTS of links both to nonfiction and fiction
regarding AI and sexuality (and most of it is free).
[kalcobalt] 3:46 pm: (At present the links are a bit buried in the information
nal posts -- website overhaul coming soon.)

10 Things You Always
Wanted to Know About Robot Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask) by Kal Cobalt:
http://www.circlet.com/?p=48

Questions this raised for me
How might the concept of "consent" apply to AIs, purpose-designed or otherwise? (I know there's no firm answer, but I'm interested in your thoughts.)

How does the consent issue change with AIs that are purpose-designed or not purpose-designed? How about "adulthood" as it applies to being able to grant consent with the learning neural nets approach to AI?

A ball of interrelated questions--Other than "romantic interest," how do you think sexualizing AIs might change the stories that are told about them? And how might gender performativity and expectations be superimposed onto AIs once that occurs? Do we have to watch out for the "noble savage" approach to AIs? How should/might their motivations differ from a human in such a relationship?

IndieGoGo is like Kiva but for creative projects. (If you're not familiar with Kiva, it allows people to make micro-loans [like $25] directly to other people in poorer countries/circumstances to fund relatively cheap projects that can make a major difference in their lives and communities.) Boing-Boing article. The different incentives offered are interesting--makes simple Tuckerization look like an amateur's game. Even if I never use this service, I like it for marketing/crowdfunding ideas.

Aw, that's sweet.

As part of a YouTube pitch to be part of Google's superfast internet experiment, Topeka, Kansas temporarily renamed itself Google. (This was mentioned in the March 30th Future Tense.)

For April Fools' Day, Google temporarily renamed itself Topeka.

They like each other!

Thing I want to see on company/commercial web 3.0 (or whatever iteration we're about to be up to): approved blogstreams. It's the next step beyond in-house blogs. The ability to filter RSS output feeds by tags, and to pull RSS input feeds into one massive stream, means a little tagging could automatically create a stream that serves as an information clearinghouse on a company/organization's website.

It's a little bit more fine-tuned than creating an auto-stream of your Google tracking would be--though that would be the minimal-effort solution.

Sure, moderation could be a bitch. You could either allow people to auto-add themselves to the stream and crowdsource that moderation, or you could approve certain bloggers--for example, Prada might approve certain fashion bloggers. Then anything they wrote and tagged "Pradablog" would automatically get pulled to Prada's Blogstream. Writers could add review blogs, with keys by their name. It would take a little effort on both sides to gain a wider audience for the blogger and a centralized, constantly updating, rolling news/reviews/updates/gossip page for the company/organization.

Perhaps somebody's already doing this?

Dear web,
Make it so.
Love,
Me
